Barry lined up alongside Frank Lampard in the centre of midfield with Steven Gerrard moved out to the left in place of James Milner, and he - brought into the side to shield the back four - was one of the few to perform on the night, seeing plenty of action in the first half with England ceding possession and territory to their opponents far too often.
Amidst misplaced paces and skewed techniques, Barry was by and large a calming presence but was unable to inject any life or creativity into the game as England continually sought to get that all important goal.
Barry was withdrawn with just over five minutes remaining, being replaced by Peter Crouch.
