Club vs Country

This is a debate I have had with my friends several times over the years but I wanted to open it up to garner some fresh opinions.

What do you think players care more about: Their club or the country?

What do you as a fan care about? Your club or your country?

For example, if you could choose your favorite club to win the UEFA champions league (and not qualify the next 7 years) or have your country win the World Cup (and not qualify for the next one) which would you choose?

My friends were at the consensus that country was more important for both fans and players. However, none of us grew up fans of a club, so that loyalty is not really there.

The past few years I have become of the opinion that players care more about their club but am curious as to what you think on both points.

Thanks!

By and large I think most football fans put club well ahead of country.

Club. National teams in all sports play a second fiddle to club squads in my mind.

I’d rather the United States win the World Cup than City the EPL title or Champions League. But I’m not English, so I’m not a good person to ask.

I think you’d struggle to find an English City fan who would prefer England to win the World Cup than City win the league (or any trophy for that matter).

Right, and that’s fine, I understand. I’m not an English-born fan, though, and haven’t lived and died with City like those fans have.

Think of it this way – Preds win the Cup or US wins hockey gold.

That’s how I think of it, and just like I told J.P. the other day, I’d rather the US win gold.

Caps winning the Cup trumps a US gold times a factor of 100.

To each their own.
