January transfer window thread

The January transfer window is almost upon us and talk at this stage is about who will leave the club, rather than any signings that Roberto Mancini may make.

I'll leave this post open throughout the month to post any links, news, rumours or confirmed signings.

Tevez and Balotelli to Milan?

Matthew Barker tweeted that Corriere dello Sport is reporting that PSG are hoping to sign Alex Pato, which will help Milan finance a January move for Carlos Tevez and a summer move for Mario Balotelli.

Good and bad

Tevez could get traded to an Amazonian tribe for all I care (I frankly hope this is his final destination). As for Balotelli, such a move would surprise me. He seems happy here, Mancini sings his praises daily and he’s one of the more talked about players in the EPL. Silva should be the face of the franchise but for now, it’s Balotelli. I can’t see him going to Milan unless he really, really misses Italy.

Suffering Brain – don’t intend to be mean but City isn’t a ‘franchise’. It’s a football club. In the NFL there are a fixed number of teams – 32 I believe. Each one rightly called a ‘franchise’ and always at the mercy of relocating wherever the highest bidder wants to put it. English football has thousands of clubs, anyone of which could in theory climb the mountain to the Premier League. And many clubs have indeed risen from either relative or complete obscurity to do so.

It might seem semantic. But there’s a difference. In Europe the clubs ultimately have the power. Not the leagues.

If you were offered Wayne Bridge

for a large order of fries and a Coke, would you make the trade?

Me? Depends on the fries. :)

by SufferingBruin on Dec 31, 2011 2:42 PM GMT reply actions

Hope Bridge leaves...

eating up wages and doing nothing while pretending like he’s being mistreated. Would be sad to see Onouha go. A City lad through and through, wish he could go on loan but whatever is best for his career should be in the best interests of the fans and management at this point.

Also

Couldn’t think of a better way to ring in the new year than with a City win tomorrow, following United’s humiliating loss (according to the odds, it was the biggest EPL upset of all time), Chelsea’s loss, and Spurs’ draw.

Guidetti

MEN reports he is staying at Feyenoord (where he has apparently impressed so far) for the season.

by Danny Pugsley on Jan 5, 2012 8:18 PM GMT reply actions

Eredivise

Something to remember about Guidetti’s scoring is that it is notoriously easy to score in the Eredivise. Obviously it’s not a bad thing that he is scoring, though.

de Rossi

The Guardian suggests he may be signed if Mancini can first offload from the squad.

soccernet reports he's staying

but that’s soccernet.

Same source—both Inter and AC Milan are bidding for Tevez. Is it me or is that a dream for City? Two of the biggest teams in Italy, bitter rivals, in a bidding war for the Wild Diva of the Pampas? It drives his price up, all but assures he’ll be out of here and soon leaving the rest of the month to either reallocate the funds elsewhere or keep the cards we have. And we got some cards, don’t we? :)

by SufferingBruin on Jan 5, 2012 11:53 PM GMT up reply actions

Well Inter's need

is much greater than Milan’s. Hoping Inter goes for the jugular with this reported bid.

I spy with my little eye...

AC driving up the price. If Inter backs off, they’ve got Tevez to go with the mad Swede—-not exactly bad news. Tevez, when he is on, is as good as anyone. But if they drive up the price and Inter matches or beats it then what is AC’s loss, really?

If I were AC, I’d drive up the price as much as possible. I’d slow play it like a Hold ‘Em hand. Inter is in the Big Blind—they need a spark and Tevez, when on, is a firework. Don’t get me wrong—I hope both of his Achilles tendons snap like kindling but until then, I’ll settle for a bidding war between the two Milan clubs that makes us some money and gets rid of Kardashian… er, Tevez.

by SufferingBruin on Jan 6, 2012 3:40 AM GMT up reply actions

If Benzema is out long-term with that ankle injury today, does Madrid become a bidder for Tevez? Along with the Milan clubs, they’re the other non-EPL, non-PSG team that can afford to pay his wages and suddenly have need for a striker. I doubt Mourihno puts up with a drama queen, but what do I know?

say it ain't so Mario

Really hoping Balotelli isn’t leaving he’s their most intriguing player.

Tevez PSG move off?

The Guardian reports that it now seems unlikely that Tevez moves to PSG. Time and options running out?

Tevez

Some interesting quotes from Kia Joorabchian today regarding Tevez’s future, confirming that Tevez accepts he will have to head back to Manchester.

Meanwhile, Milan have announced the signing of Maxi Lopez – a move that lookd likely to shut the door on any hpes Tevez had of moving to the Rossonieri.

Tevez was close to Milan move...

…according to @tancredipalmeri on Twitter:

JUST IN:Galliani to Milan Channel:“At 18.30 the deal was almost done, and Tevez ready to fly. It’s a pity. We’ll try again in next 4 months.”

Galliani is full of crap. Love love love the Chairman’s comments about them

by Jeremy Morris on Jan 28, 2012 4:05 AM GMT reply actions

So here we are. Tevez still a City player and likely to remain so until the end of the season. Pardon me for wondering — but it would appear there might be a bargain to be made here. I believe it would be in the immediate interests of both City and Tevez to come to some kind of accommodation. Two things have never been in doubt: 1) He’s a world class player and 2) He’s a tiger on the pitch. Right now we’re three points ahead of United. There’s no doubt he would be an asset to the team as we try to win our first title in more than 40 years. At the same time it’s also in City’s interest to raise his perceived value to other clubs so we can maximize our return in four months time – and of course it’s in Tevez’s interest to do the same. That won’t happen if he spends the rest of the season sunning himself in Argentina. I don’t think anyone would think less of anyone if we work something out with him. Winning isn’t everything. It’s the only thing. Thoughts?

by Jeremy Morris on Jan 28, 2012 4:12 AM GMT reply actions

True, but

Could severely hamper the team chemistry that has been building so far this season (though of late sometimes its a bit shaky, but this is probably due to the absence of Yaya and Kompany). When Tevez is on the pitch the offense essentially goes through him but now we are seeing it go through Silva first, then to the forwards, and I think this is much more effective.. I agree with your idea 100% about raising his value, but I just don’t know if it’s feasible at this point. Bridges seem to be completely burned. I mean, he’s been in Argentina for what, 3 months now?

I agree with sonics

Even if City isn’t getting the value that they want for Tevez, they should still ship him off. No bad mojo for this team right now. Granted, if Tevez wants to come back and will follow orders then yes, bring him back but I don’t see Tevez acting like that.

by Shinjo Is God on Jan 28, 2012 10:50 PM GMT up reply actions

Even if he says, "I'll be a good boy!"

I wouldn’t do it.

1) He’s out of shape.
2) In order to be effective, he’s got to have the ball. A lot.
3) Who’s to say he won’t blow up again?

Don’t pay him another dime, don’t trust anything he says and don’t let him in the gate.

I’ve never seen a striker as dangerous as Tevez when he’s on his game. The man is scary with the ball at his feet and green grass ahead of him. I used to joke that he’s the Kim Kardashian of soccer but he’s not—he’s Terrel Owens. Like Owens, I expect Tevez to be broke and begging for a job by his late 30’s.

Mancini and Man City have handled this situation perfectly. May they continue to do so.
