City 2-3 United in Community Shield Match: Post-Game Reaction

Photo

Call it a glorified friendly or pre-season match, but the loss to bitter rivals United doesn't hurt any less. City lost the game on an extra time defensive Vincent Kompany blunder, of all people, in a stagnant second half performance.

Star-divide

Despite having the lower share of ball possession in the first half, City managed to put two goals past new United acquisition, David de Gea.  Dzeko's cracker of a goal from way out was cooly put past the young keeper who reacted in a sluggish manner probably being caught by surprise.

David Silva's performance in the second half was lack luster and the entire midfield seemed to lack initiative and a zest for the game.  United's athleticism proved too much as they clawed back two goals and Nani cooly put it past Hart in extra time, due to a defensive blunder from captain Kompany.

Tactic

What was Mancini thinking when he put on Barry, Milner, Toure, De Jong at the same time. Those four are all defensive and almost the same type of player. Playing with a Defensive tactic vs Manchester United is suicide.

The team should have been like this:

                          Hart

Richards – Kompany – Lescott – Clichy

Adam Johnson – David Silva – De Jong – Shawn Wright Phillips/Vladimir Weiss

Aguero – Tevez/Balotelli

Mancinis formation lacked speed and creativity. It’s impossible for Silva to be the only playmaker on the field. Whenever he got the ball he did something good, when he passed the ball the others messed up..

Were you watching the same game?

I remember a few good break aways by Silva at the 80+ mark and he wasted oppurtunities to put the ball in the box.

Tevez should not have been in the game as he just came back from South America and Aguero is fresh off a transfer.

Ballo didn’t do anything all game.

The one player you leave out scored a cracking goal from outside the box.

Let’s be honest de Gea should have saved that shot there was no excuse for that. SWP should have played since I don’t have enough fingers to count the amount of times he has burned United players out on the wing and especially Evra. United hit us hardest on the wings, with Nani and especially Young in the first half. Young is a player that really frustrates me; I really don’t think he is that good, but defenses are always so nervous and overly cautious against him that it makes him look better than he actually is. I understand Mancini started out wanting Milner to play a bit more wide on the right but that was never going to work.

How are we being honest when that isn’t what happened at all.

Should have, would have, could have.

He didn’t save it because the defense didn’t do their job and it was a pretty decent low shot. Very good power and bounce right when de Gea was jumping for it.

You’re kidding right? Sure, Vidic should have stepped up but that shot was just a step to de Gea’s right and the entire footballing community agrees that he should have saved it. It was a good low shot but it was close to de Gea, he should have had. Just like Kompany shouldn’t have made his mistake, neither should de Gea have.

I really don’t see your point.

Should we count the offside goal against Inter as well if were at this?

From that distance the blame rests squarely on the defense for not doing it’s job.

You don’t see anyone criticizing Hart for not saving the shot from Nani.

This is what I don’t like about some City fans and British media outlets (not specifically targeting you Sonic), but when Dzeko does something good and ends up being the only player on the pitch that played a good game, people start saying about how ’’lucky’’ it was and start blaming something else instead of saying ‘’Well done Edin.’’

Just enjoy the fact that de Gea was caught off guard and that it went in. There is definitely bias on my part and others, but it gets annoying when people start taking credit away from certain players. Especially when they do exactly what is expected of them and more.

He is there to score goals. So far he is looking like he has the hang of it. Let’s be happy it went in and that City will be fine without Tevez and be optimistic about Aguero.

I never said I was unhappy that it went in. I was extremely happy when it went it, even wrote so on the game thread here on B&B because it made de Gea look bad. I give Dzeko credit for hitting a good shot, though the placement wasn’t exactly in a spot where the keeper shouldn’t get to it, especially from that far out. Sure, Vidic didn’t do his job but when a shot is taken from that far out in plain sight for the keeper with not an absurd amount of curve/placement on it, there’s no reason for the keeper to not get to it. I wanted Edin to take that shot so I’m glad he did, I’m just saying that it is one de Gea should have saved. I’m happy that Dzeko was hungry to get a goal and was at least spraying a shot on goal which City didn’t do much of, and he didn’t really have much help in attack on that play.

Yes, its unfortunate the offsides goal against Inter wasn’t allowed and he didn’t get credit for it.
And no, no one is criticizing Hart because there is not much a keeper can do when he is 1 on 1 with an attacker in 6 yard box. Hart’s situation was a lot harder than de Gea’s.

Sorry about that last comment.

I get extremely biased when I smoke.

Bah. That didn’t feel like a pre season loss. Komps thought Clichy was gonna get it, Clichy thought Komps was gonna get it, lucky bounce.

I didn’t like the Barry sub either, but whatevs. Its only the preseason right?

Curious to see our starting 11 Monday. I’m assuming it will be the same as today with Kun coming on for Mario.

Anyone else think thats the best half Milner has played for City in the first half? Theres a positive.
