Euro 2012 for Nigel de Jong is over. Needing a win - combined with help elsewhere - Holland took an early lead against Portugal, but failed their lead and ultimately fell to a 2-1 defeat that saw them finish bottom of Group B without a point.

Level at the half, Holland largely failed to capitalise on their possession dominance and were outshot both in terms of total shots and shots on goal. It was no surprise then, when late on Cristian Ronaldo scored his second of the game to give Portugal victory.

de Jong completed 95% of his 78 passes and made 7/8 long balls from deep. Defensively he had two interceptions and one clearance but only scored a 6.07 game rating from whoscored.com.

Had Holland have picked up the necessary result they would have progressed given Germany's win over Denmark.

The first of the quarter-finals are set with Germany facing Greece and Czech Republic taking on Portugal.
