Here you have a player whose ego and wallet were indulged in equal measure – to some tune as well – and was the focal point and heart of a side that won the FA Cup (with Tevez himself lifting the famous old trophy) with City now find themselves legitimately challenging for the Premier League (the most high profile, and possibly the best league in the world) and look to be a fixture in the Champions League. Yet if this is still not enough what could serve to satisfy?

Still, City were hardly shot-shy during the game. They attempted 21 shots (12 inside and nine outside the area), but nine were off target and ten were blocked by an Everton side who also made 19 interceptions and 38 clearances (15 of which were effective).

Given the offensive threat that Richards poses, the clash between the pair was always going to be an intriguing one. With an unrivalled threat running with the ball, Bale is arguably as dangerous an attacking threat there is in the Premier League, but Richards contribution to City’s potent attacking play should not be underestimated. The key was whether either players natural game and instincts would be stymied in trying to counter the threat of the other.

The full extent of Manchester City's legal dispute with Carlos Tevez can be revealed after it emerged the club had found him guilty of gross misconduct for going on strike and taken away £9.3m from the Argentinian in fines, lost wages and bonuses since the start of the season.

The league leaders stopped paying Tevez's salary at the end of November and fined him six weeks' wages, amounting to £1.2m, during a disciplinary hearing held on 21 December. Tevez immediately launched an appeal, despite having flown to Buenos Aires on 7 November and making it clear he would not return, but a subsequent hearing on 11 January upheld the decision.

Ben Mee, former skipper of City's 2008 FA Youth Cup-winning side, has joined Burnley for an undisclosed fee.

The lifelong City fan has been on a season-long loan at Turf Moor and manager Eddie Howe has decided to make the move permanent, agreeing a deal that will last until 2015.

Mee made just one appearance for City during a 2-1 Carling Cup defeat to West Brom last season and later spent time on loan with Leicester. Despite a handful of appearances on the bench, he has since found first team opportunities limited.

Mee joins fellow former Academy team-mate Kieran Trippier who joined the Clarets last week.
